fast five: quick questions with anne m. bentley

Ready to hit the road? Celebrate the beginning of spring with our fabulous spring journals celebrating three dream road trip destinations: San Francisco (our foggy home city), Nashville, and New Orleans.

Bookstagrammer @Jennsbookvibes is hosting a journal giveaway right now through March 29th, so head over to her Instagram and enter to win one of these winsome journals. To celebrate, we sat down with illustrator Anne M. Bentley for a quick chat about mapmaking, Motown, and her ideal weekend trip.

What was an unexpected challenge you had when illustrating these journals?

Maps are always a challenge, but so much fun to make! I have the most difficulty editing maps and deciding which landmarks make the cut, because I don’t want it to be too visually busy. And I take A LOT of artistic license when composing the maps, in an effort to make a pleasing picture. So things often are not where they really should be. Don’t ever try to use one to get from point A to point B!

What was a serendipitous moment you had when illustrating these journals?

Not exactly serendipitous, but learning some surprising things about Nashville while researching, that I didn’t know. Like the fact that the tallest indoor statue in the U.S. is there. And it’s inside a replica of the Parthenon. What?! Before Nashville was known as Music City, apparently it was known (at least by Tennesseans) as “Athens of the South.”

Who is an artist in your field whose work you’re excited about right now?

So many! At the moment I’m really into The Daily Don on Instagram.

Who is an artist outside your field whose work you’re enjoying right now?

Listening to Motown a lot lately, especially Smokey Robinson.

If you could take a weekend trip to anywhere, where would you go?

Hmm. Maybe Stinson Beach or Wine Country. I’m thinking R E L A X A T I O N.
